On Wednesday, Nov. 27 from 1 to 5 p.m. the third annual “3 v. 3 Basketball Turkey Tournament” will take place at the Church Street Recreation Center. Boys and girls in fourth through eighth grades will have half a day of school, so it’s a great way to spend a fun-filled afternoon getting ready for the basketball season and hanging out with friends.
The tournament is a partnership of the Moorestown Youth Basketball Association (MYBA) and the Moorestown Parks and Recreation Department. Proceeds will go to the MYBA scholarship funds and for Moorestown Parks and Rec. youth programs scholarships. The fee is $25.
Colleen Maguire and Tara Hinshillwood from the MYBA came up with the idea for the event and continue to run it.
“It’s like good old-fashioned basketball, and we keep it competitive,” Hinshillwood said. “We create balanced, co-ed teams that will compete well against each other. Games are 16 minutes long. We run four at a time with a running clock, scorekeeper and referees.”
Each child is guaranteed at least three games. When they’re not on the court, there’s music, games and snacks on the third floor throughout the afternoon.
“It’s kind of the official kickoff to the basketball and holiday seasons,” Hinshillwood said. “Fall sports have wrapped up, the travel basketball season starts the following week and the Rec. basketball league starts in January. The last two years the event has sold out. When parents are prepping for Thanksgiving it’s a great thing for kids to do. Drop ’em off, and you’ll thank us later.”
And don’t forget the Thanksgiving pie baking classes. For three hours, pie dough and filling will be made from scratch for both pumpkin and apple cinnamon pies. Dates are as follows: Nov. 25 from 4 to 7 p.m. for grades two to six; Nov. 26 from 5 to 8 p.m. for grades five to ten; Nov. 26 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. for grades two to six and Nov. 2 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. for grades three to eight. All pantry items are generously donated by Wegmans.
Charity Bowl 2020
Moorestown’s annual Charity Flag Football Bowl will take place the day after Thanksgiving to benefit children in Camden and Burlington Counties. This great community tradition continues 14 years later, has grown considerably and runs like a finely tuned machine. There are six different divisions that encompass third grade to adults.
Funds raised go to the Boys & Girls Club of Camden; the Moorestown Township Recreation donation fund and The Children of MEND (Moorestown Economical Neighborhood Development).
