Delran’s trunk-or-treat is set for Oct. 26 at Delran Community Park. The annual event is a safe opportunity for the community to come together and have an extra opportunity to experience the fun of Halloween.
Delran Community Park will be shut down that day during the event. Gates will open for a half hour between 2 and 2 :30 p.m. for residents to come in and decorate their cars. According to Councilman Tyler Burrell, the event is targeted toward younger children and allows for a controlled environment for families to enjoy their time and not have to worry as much.
“Former Councilwoman Lana Pangia actually put together the idea a few years ago,” said Burrell. “I believe the concept was popping up around other towns at the time, and we saw it as another avenue for trick-or-treating safety.
“In this setting, it’s an enclosed space so people know who their children are around compared to just being in town and walking around on the street,” Burrell continued. “Parents also don’t have to be concerned about vehicles coming down the street or for older kids mixing with the younger kids. There’s less to worry about, which allows it to be more fun for children and their parents.”
According to Burrell, since Pangia first brought the idea to Delran, the event has grown each year. The community has supported the event and looks forward to the costume contest, the best decorated car contest, prizes and candy each year. The event even incorporates the Delran Fire Department as it is the judge for these contests.
“In prior years, we have heard great comments about trunk-or-treat from the community,” said Burrell. “I think the community enjoys it because it is also like another opportunity to get out and enjoy Halloween. Sometimes Halloween can come by pretty quick. It’s a busy time of year.
“I personally enjoy the event and look forward to it each year,” Burrell continued. “It’s a great way to welcome in the fall by hanging out with the community, your friends and family. You can welcome in the fall weather while the kids and parents are laughing and smiling and having a great time. Last year, we did the cupid shuffle with the kids and the fire department and it really warms your heart to bring the community together this way.”
To participate in the event, residents have to register on the township website at Delrantownship.org. Registration will open Saturday, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. One ticket reserves one car spot, therefore, one family only needs one ticket. No walk-ins are permitted and registration is free. It is also strongly encouraged that children and parents come dressed in their Halloween costumes, decorate their cars and bring candy for approximately 300 children.
