Clearview Regional BOE fills open staffing position

The board remedied a few of the open positions as the school year quickly approaches.

Clearview Regional’s board of education squared away one of the district’s open staffing positions as the 2019-2020 school year quickly approaches.

Well ahead of the winter wrestling season, the board unanimously, with the exception of Scott Muscarella, Michele Giaquinto and Paul Ware who were all absent, approved hiring Steve Turi as the new wrestling head coach.

He has 15 years of experience, knows our program and we’re thrilled to have someone with his background,” said Superintendent John Horchak. “Most recently, he helped out at West Deptford and Deptford school systems. He’s already been a head coach as well.”

Horchak added Turi graduated from Clearview in 1995 and was a member of the military since then. The current assistant coaches will remain the same.

While they were able to hire a new head coach, Horchak said the district still has an open call for a full-time high school physics teacher. The previous person who the district used to fill the position retired for personal reasons.

We’ve been able to fill that void over the last five or six times with one person who was a retired physics teacher out of Audubon, Bob Grant,” Horchak said. “I spoke with him the other day and he told me he got back from a vacation and his wife wanted to travel more.”

In addition to filling an open position at the middle school for a math teacher, Horchak proposed a temporary fix to move someone from the high school to the middle school when they aren’t teaching if the staff and student schedules call for an opening at the high school.

If the schedules don’t play out, we do have two first-year teachers who are interested,” he added.

Additionally, the open full-time high school office secretary position was made into two part-time position with overlapping hours. Ideally, the hours would be 7 a.m. to noon and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to provide the existing full-time workers the opportunity to take lunch breaks.

Neither of the two part-time positions would come with benefits. Students are welcome to apply for the positions, if their schedules allow.

We’d pick up around $20,000 to $25,000 in savings without having a reduction in force,” Horchak added.

In other news:

  • Alexander Skalski (high school, chemistry) and Erin Zambon (middle school, science) were hired for the upcoming school year.
  • The July 25 meeting was cancelled.
  • The board, Horchak and Business Administrator Esther Pennell were trained on how to use a new software, BoardDocs. A public version is projected to be up by the August meeting.
  • The track resurfacing project was completed and it is open for use.

The next board of education meeting is scheduled for Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. in the Administration Building (420 Cedar Road, Mullica Hill).
