Cooper River bridge construction to continue through mid-October

Circumstances such as inclement weather have caused the construction projects on the Grove Street and Cuthbert Boulevard bridges to be delayed.

Construction on two Camden County bridges that cross into or near Haddonfield will require closures until approximately the middle of October as crews continue to make major improvements.

The Grove Street bridge will maintain a one-way detour until Monday, Sept. 17, and outer lanes on the Cuthbert Boulevard Bridge will close beginning Sept. 10, and remain closed until Oct. 15.

“Due to a variety of extenuating circumstances, including inclement weather, these projects are continuing slightly past our original estimated date of completion,” said Camden County Freeholder Susan Shin Angulo, liaison to the Department of Public Works. “We want to ensure all of the work can be completed so it was necessary to slightly expand the scope of the project and extend the completion deadline. Nevertheless, this work is critical to our bridge and roadway network and paramount to keep drivers and pedestrians moving through Camden County.”

First announced this July, the $1 million projects funded by the state Department of Transportation Local Bridge Future Needs fund will include the strengthening of weakened beams by the addition of steel angles, steel plate and steel channels to the webs and flanges of the affected beams as specified by the engineer. The work shall include traffic control and maintenance, cleaning and painting of steel and the installation of reinforced concrete diaphragms.

“As this project progresses the Department of Public Works will continue to keep the public apprised of all lane closures and detour changes,” Shin Angulo said. “Projects like this can be unpredictable when waterways and weather are factored in, however we are making sure that crews progress as quickly as is safe.”

Joe Ragusa, overseeing the construction management of both operations, can answer any questions the public may have about the projects. He can be reached at (609) 828–3222 or by email at [email protected].
