A long stretch of extreme heat is about the arrive in South Jersey. The National Weather Service in Mt. Holly has issued an excessive heat watch for Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties from Wednesday morning at 8 a.m. through the evening of Sunday, July 21, at 10 p.m.
Temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be in the low-to-mid 90s with heat index values ranging from 100 to 105. The heat will be even worse Friday through Sunday. Temperatures will approach the upper 90s during the weekend and with high humidity, the heat index will fall between 105 and 110 degrees.
The highest heat index values will occur during the day, but there will not be much relief at night due to how hot and oppressive the weather will be.
The high temperatures and high humidity could create a dangerous situation over the next five days. Heat stress may occur during outdoor work or extended exposure to the heat. Everyone is reminded to stay hydrated, stay out of the sun, remain in an air-conditioned room while indoors and check up on relatives and neighbors.
