Mayor’s Message: Nixle service for residents

Nixle is the first standardized, secured and certified communication platform for local police departments, municipalities, schools and agencies to share important, neighborhood-level information to residents.

In 2009, Voorhees Township was proud to be the first municipality on the east coast to offer a new form of communication to its residents when we teamed with Nixle, a free service that allows registered residents to receive up-to-the-minute information from the Township and schools via the Nixle system.

Residents can choose the desired level of information to be received, including severe weather events, evacuations, safety hazards, security threats, facilities problems, employee notifications, IT/telecom disruptions, public safety alerts, local traffic updates and community events. Choices are also offered regarding the method of notification, whether by text message, email or both. Nixle allows our community to stay informed and connected.

Nixle is the first standardized, secured and certified communication platform for local police departments, municipalities, schools and agencies to share important, neighborhood-level information to residents.

It uses the same compelling model as social applications such as Twitter and Facebook, while adding the security that is critical to ensure information received by users is both trustworthy and accurate. Contact information will not be released to any other entity and residents can choose to stop receiving information or change their level of information at any time. Your account can be customized so you receive the information that matters most to you. Whether it is where you live, work, or have friends or family throughout the country, the information is immediately available to you over your mobile phone, email and computer.

The Nixle system allows our police to provide information about local traffic alerts, amber alerts, road closings, etc.  It also allows the township to provide information about community activities and events.

There are currently over 8,000 agencies in the United States using Nixle with over 1.9 million subscribers. Last month, Nixle sent out 27 million messages. Over 3,000 Voorhees residents have registered for this exciting communication system and we strongly encourage others to do the same.

We have added a link to Nixle on our township website at www.voorheesnj.comwhere you can sign up at no cost. Select the ’residents’ link then click on ‘community,’ where you will find the Nixle link. For more information, visit Nixle’s website at www.nixle.com.

Join us in working to keep our community safe and informed.
