Cinnaminson Board of Education provides updates on technology offerings

At the Cinnaminson Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, June 11, Superintendent Stephen Cappello provided updates on the administrative hiring process, the second annual STEM Fair, the expansion of the Cinnaminson school’s technology offerings and the Cinnaminson High School’s Hall of Fame, among various other subjects.

At the Cinnaminson Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, June 11, Superintendent Stephen Cappello provided updates on the administrative hiring process, the second annual STEM Fair, the expansion of technology offerings and the Cinnaminson High School’s Hall of Fame, among various other subjects.

On Tuesday, May 29, Cinnaminson High School held its second annual STEM Fair. According to Cappello, the STEM Fair was conceptualized by the faculty in the high school’s science department. The event featured approximately 50 student projects from nearly 200 high school students. The projects were displayed for nearly 200 third-grade students from the Eleanor Rush Intermediate School.

The projects were mainly a result of efforts of AP Environmental and AP Biology students, while students from the technology and engineering class, AP Chemistry, AP Physics, AP Calculus and Anatomy contributed to the success of the event as well.

Outside of the success of the Stem Fair, Cappello provided an update on the expansion of the technology classes within the school district.

“This time last year, I was pleased to announce to the board that we would be offering the high school students a freshman-level elective in technology, engineering and design class,” said Cappello. “This year, I am once again pleased to report that the district is looking to expand offerings to students at all four schools.”

“At CHS, a second-year technology, engineering and design course is being offered, and the entry-level class is being expanded to all grades.” Cappello continued. “The television studio is getting an overhaul to accommodate additional offerings in communications and broadcast technology. The middle school will also be developing a course in broadcast technology to coincide with new studio space.”

“At the elementary level, the traditional computer lab is getting an overhaul this summer similar to the work done at Rush last year,” said Cappello. “The new classroom will provide a flexible work setting for students to learn the skills necessary for computing and STEM-education.”

Additionally, the board of education meeting also took a second to congratulate the Cinnaminson High School Class of 2019 Hall of Fame inductees. Each year, a group of students joins the hall of fame based on a matrix that includes academic standing, athletics, school participation and input from their peers. This year, 11 students, Lizette Abah, Amanda Antico, Zachary Artur, Timothy Clements Jr., Madison Figiel, Grace Kenville, Madison Parrish, Shane Spence, Maura Tumelty, Megan Tumelty and Eileen Yizzi, were inducted.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the board of education will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 20 beginning at 7 p.m. in room 120 at Cinnaminson Middle School. The board and public are reminded that, for the 2019-2020 school year, all regular scheduled board meetings will begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise advertised.

Also after three rounds of interviews, the board of education narrowed down the group of finalist and hired Katheryn Mele as the new Assistant Principal of the Eleanor Rush Intermediate School and Kristen Melcher as the Assistant Principal of the Cinnaminson Middle School. Mele is currently an administrator for the Haddonfield School District and Melcher is currently an administrator in the West Deptford School District.
