Mayor’s Message: Baseball Opening Day, community garden opening, and ‘Battle of the Badges Blood Drive’

The weekly message from Mayor Joann Gattinelli

Mayor Joann Gattinelli spoke to parents before the Washington Township Little League Opening Day games about the improvements made at the baseball complex. In past meetings she has mentioned the new parking lot pavement, the new guide rail, the fresh paint on the buildings and the crossing lights. Here Gattinelli poses with council President Joe Perry, council Vice President Sean Longfellow, police captain Ken Kennedy, members of the baseball advisory board and the fire department. (Anthony J. Baseball Opening Day

On April 13, I was pleased to help kick-off the Washington Township’s Baseball Opening Day at the Baseball Complex at 317 Hurffville-Grenloch Road. Joining me was Council President Joe Perry and Council Vice President Sean Longfellow along with several members of the Washington Township baseball advisory board. I, myself, have spent many days on the ball field bleachers, cheering on my own son. Therefore, I know what an exciting day this was for all of the children, as well as the family members. I was all too happy to celebrate this day with the residents and student athletes! I would like to thank all of the individuals who had a huge part in making sure the baseball fields were updated and cleaned for this big day. I would especially like to thank our director of public works, Ernie D’Orazio, and one of his supervisors, Frank Altamuro who were continuously checking to make sure everything was completed for Opening Day. Finally, I would like to recognize and thank all of the vendors that were a part of this special day.

Community garden

On April 14, the official opening of the Washington Township community garden took place. I would like to thank the environmental commission for their continued dedication in creating and maintaining a green community for the residents of Washington Township. I would also like to thank Perry, Longfellow and former Mayor Randee Davidson for attending the opening for the community garden. Finally, I would like to acknowledge Daisy Troop #64513 for their assistance in kicking-off this event and being a part of the ceremony. If you are looking to plant some flowers or grow some vegetables and need a place to do so, there are two plots still available. Please sign up by contacting Denise Kowalski at [email protected] or at (856) 589-0520 ext. 411.

‘Battle of the Badges Blood Drive’

For the second year in a row, the Washington Township Police and Fire Departments will be hosting a ‘Battle of the Badges Blood Drive’ on Tuesday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the council room of the municipal building. This friendly competition is back by popular demand. Blood donors must choose which department they would like to “donate” for: team police or team fire. The winner will claim the winners’ plaque, as well as bragging rights for the year! Last year, team police took the win, along with the plaque. Let’s see if team fire can bring home a win this year. We ask if you’re eligible to donate blood, to please consider signing up to donate at www.redcrossblood.org and enter the sponsor code: Washington Township BOB. To find out if you’re eligible, you may visit the Red Cross website, or call 1-866-236-3276. One blood donation can save up to three lives. I look forward to seeing residents stopping in to make a difference in people’s lives at Washington Township’s second ‘Battle of the Badges.’ May the best department win!

Joann Gattinelli is the Mayor of Washington Township. She can be reached at [email protected].
