A noticeable odor of fuel oil, resulting from a Wednesday (Dec. 5) afternoon Commercial MV Accident on Route 55, is known to exist in areas along the Mantua Creek and its’ tributaries.

The product involved is diesel fuel which entered a storm drain adjacent to the highway following the accident.

State, county and municipal responders, along with environmental cleanup crews are working to mitigate the impacts from the spill. Their efforts include excavating contaminated soil, booming waterways, and vacuuming product where it pools.

Gloucester County Public Health is working with the state Department of Environmental Protection to assess any public health concerns. Residents and their pets should avoid prolonged exposure to the odors and contact with those waterways having visible oil sheen.
