Kindergarten students in Karen Turetzky’s and Tom O’Brien’s classrooms at Grenloch Terrace Early Childhood Center recently celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day on Tuesday, Sept. 26.

In Turetzky’s class, they were immersed in apples all day long. They started the day be prepping to make applesauce. Later, they read a story about Johnny Appleseed and created apple stamp prints. They even did a taste-test with different kinds of apples.

In O’Brien’s class, the students were entertained by their teacher, who dressed up like Johnny Appleseed and acted out a story in the school courtyard.

This was Johnny Appleseed’s 243rd birthday. Born John Chapman in 1774, he received the Johnny Appleseed moniker thanks to a life of planting orchards and selling land in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and more. His legend grew after his death, with many stories, songs and films created that were based on his life.
