Letter to the editor: Raising the minimum wage

Writer: ‘$15 per hour should be phased in over a period of time at $1.50 per hour.’

A “quantum leap” from the effective minimum wage on Jan. 1 of $8.60 to $15 is equal to an increase of $6.40 per hour or $13,312 per year. An increase of that magnitude would certainly be unrealistic for anyone to expect to happen, nor would it be feasible for a business to absorb. On the other hand, increases from the existing minimum wage of $8.44 to the wage of $8.60 on Jan. 1, is merely 16 cents per hour or $333 on an annual basis — that may cover the expense of one trip to the dentist for each of a family’s two children. That minimal increase is unrealistic.

$15 per hour is a reasonable wage and should be phased in over a short but reasonable period of time at $1.50 per hour. Within slightly more than 4 years the proposed rate could be achieved. Individuals would see the benefits of entering the work force, working families could begin to enjoy a better life, contribute more back to society and take there names off social welfare programs.

Businesses can and will adjust, but they need to stop hollering ‘wolf’ and claim jobs will be lost and working will suffer — they’re already suffering.

It’s time to give families an opportunity to move toward and into the real middle class.
