United Way, AARP offering tax assistance

Press release from the United Way of Gloucester County:

Beginning in February, AARP volunteers will provide free assistance to taxpayers filing their annual federal and state income tax returns at 7 locations throughout Gloucester County. As a result of grants secured by the United Way of Gloucester County and the AARP Foundation Tax Aid Program, each site offers free online filing to reduce processing time and accelerate payment of refunds.

Last year, the Gloucester County tax-aide resulted in serving 3,253 clients with 2,308 filed returns. Based on an estimated savings of $200 per return, the clients saved over $461,600 in tax filing fees. The client refunds totaled almost $2 million for the 2017 filing year.

Local residents with low household incomes and senior citizens are invited to schedule tax assistance appointments at AARP tax assistance sites located at the following locations: Glassboro Senior Citizen Center (856–881–8504, ext. 3), Mullica Hill Branch Library (856–223–6033) and the United Way of Gloucester County office in Thorofare (856–845–4303 ext. 13).

All sites have varying schedules and appointments are required. It is not necessary to be an AARP member; walk-ins will not be accepted at any location.

Clients must come prepared with documentation, including last year’s tax return, social security card, photo ID, and income documentation. For a complete list of required documents, please call one of the tax help locations or visit www.AARP.org.

AARP volunteers participate in an extensive training program and are required to pass the Internal Revenue Service’s tax preparer’s certification test. To schedule an appointment, please call the location you would like to visit for tax assistance.
