RCGC announces documentary screening and panel discussion

Press release from Rowan College at Gloucester County

On Oct. 17 at 10:30 a.m., the Displaced Homemakers Network of New Jersey and the Center for People in Transition at Rowan College at Gloucester County (RCGC) will host a special screening of Kamala Lopez and Patricia Arquette’s groundbreaking documentary “Equal Means Equal”. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion and refreshments.

“Equal Means Equal” offers an unflinching look at the treatment of women in the United States. Examining both real-life stories and precedent-setting legal cases, director Kamala Lopez uncovers how outdated and discriminatory attitudes influence seemingly disparate issues, from workplace harassment to domestic violence, rape and sexual assault to the foster care system, and the health care conglomerate to the judicial system. Along the way, she reveals the inadequacy of present laws that claim to protect women, ultimately presenting a compelling and persuasive argument for the urgency of ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment.

The event will conclude with a panel discussion, offering attendees the opportunity to question experts in a range of related fields. The panel will include Monique Castillo of Higher Ground Financial Services, Victoria Chase of Rutgers Law, Patti Davis of the New Jersey Department of Labor’s Center for Occupational Employment Information, Gina Ridge of the Center for Family Services, Ruth Anne Robbins of Rutgers Law and Lori Shaw of the Gloucester County Sheriff’s Department.

The event is free to attend, but seating is limited and registration is required. Please register today by calling (856) 415–2222 or atRCGC.edu/equal. For more information on the work of RCGC’s Center for People in Transition, visit RCGC.edu/PIT.

Rowan College at Gloucester County’s 250-acre campus is located on Tanyard Road in Deptford, just off Exit 56 off of Route 55.
