WTHS student honored as recipient of school resource officer Challenge Coin Award

Press release from Washington Township Public Schools

Special to The Sun: From left: Washington Township High School assistant principal Steve Cordner, Washington Township Police Sgt. Bill Lee, School Resource Officer Tom DiTullio and Executive Assistant Principal John Saverase presented junior Dylan Thompson with a Challenge Coin award for his recent level-headedness and intervention.

See something. Say something. That’s exactly what junior Dylan Thompson did recently in diffusing a confrontation between classmates at Washington Township High School. His concern and immediate intervention caught the attention of School Resource Officer Tom DiTullio, who then rewarded Thompson for his actions with a Challenge Coin.

The Challenge Coin Award, which was initiated by DiTullio and fellow SRO Tony Leone, is presented to students who display the principles of kindness, duty, honor, courage, pride and respect when faced with unexpected challenges at school.

The Challenge Coins are intended to connect police and students in a positive light. One side of the Challenge Coin has an image of the police department’s logo and the citizenship principles. The other side of the coin honors the bravery and dedication of Washington Township Police Corporal Steve Levy, who made the ultimate sacrifice and gave his life in the line of duty in October 1999.
