Janine Morrow wins homecoming queen

Press release from Washington Township Public Schools

Special to The Sun: Homecoming Queen Janine Morrow (left) and escort Scott Bonerbo take a ride on the golf cart after the halftime crowning ceremony.

Janine Morrow could only stand with her mouth agape after seeing her flower box contained the sought-after white roses. The Washington Township High School senior was in the spotlight on Friday night, Oct. 26, the white roses signifying that she was the school’s 2018 Homecoming Queen. Morrow and escort Scott Bonerbo made the requisite lap around the stadium on a golf cart, one of the highlights of a successful Homecoming on and off the field.

Prior to the football game between the Minutemen and Hammonton High School, WTHS staged its 18th annual Spirit Parade. Grand Marshal of the parade was Ann Moore, who in July retired as WTHS principal following 36 years of service. Moore accepted her sash from 11/12 wing executive assistant principal John Saverase and junior/senior class advisor Carol Costello.

At halftime, Morrow was crowned queen of the Homecoming court, which featured 12 senior girls. Morrow was presented her crown by 2017 queen Lizzy Pinto.

The Minutemen football team did their part as well, using a big defensive stand in the final seconds to hold on for a 13–7 win. The victory earned the team a spot in the South Jersey Group V playoff field for the first time since 2015. The fireworks display scheduled for postgame had to be postponed due to inclement weather, but now will take place after the annual Powder Puff football game on Nov. 27.
