WTHS students plan study abroad trips this summer

Seven sophomore and junior students will be traveling the world to destinations in France, Portugal, Costa Rica, and Japan.

While most of their Washington Township High School classmates will venture to the Jersey Shore during the summer, three current sophomores, Joseph Wozniak, Brianna Myers, and Persia Vahidi, and four current juniors, Joe Rotella, Katie Parchesky, Kiley Gelston and Madalyn Campbell, will be seeking adventure around the world for three to four weeks as part of the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) Global Navigator Scholarship program.

“These students will definitely experience the learning adventure of a lifetime,” District World Language Supervisor Rosemarie Armstrong said. “These summer study abroad programs feature top-notch academics and cultural immersion, combined with exciting activities and travel in one of 16 amazing destinations around the world. This is an exciting and rare opportunity for our students to explore places they’ve seen only in photographs and gain experiences that will prepare them for college and beyond.”

Three of the students, Madalyn Campbell, Brianna Myers and Katie Parchesky, will be enrolling in an intensive French language program in Rennes, France. Joseph Wozniak and Joe Rotella will be studying biodiversity and conservation in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Persia Vahidi will be studying Japanese language and pop culture in Tokyo, Japan, and Kiley Gelston will be studying aquatic ecosystems and sustainability in Lisbon, Portugal.

Scholarships through CIEE, covering 10 to 100 percent of the program tuition, are awarded based on merit and financial need and do not cover airfare, passport or visa fees, or personal spending money. Included in the destinations of the 2017 CIEE high school summer study abroad programs were: Rabat, Morocco; Nanjing, China; Toulouse, France; Berlin, Germany; Ferrara, Italy; Tokyo, Japan; Guanajuato, Mexico; Seville and Madrid, Spain; Lisbon, Portugal; Seoul, South Korea and Dublin, Ireland.

A nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, CIEE is the world leader in international education and exchange. For more than 67 years CIEE has helped thousands of people gain the knowledge and skills necessary to live and work in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world by offering the most comprehensive, relevant, and valuable exchange programs available.
