Voorhees Soccer Association partnering with Virtua Hospital to host toy drive to benefit opening of Brooke’s Toy Closet at Virtua
The Voorhees Soccer Association is partnering with Virtua Hospital to host a toy drive to benefit the opening of Brooke’s Toy Closet at Virtua Hospital.
The opening of Brooke’s Toy Closet at Virtua Hospital is being organized by the Voorhees Soccer Association Board to honor the memory of Brooke Mulford who lost her nearly lifelong battle with cancer on June 12.
Brooke, who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2009 when she was 4 years old, first created Brooke’s Toy Closet in 2014 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in her native Salisbury, Md.
The closet is a special cabinet filled with toys, coloring books and other goodies that the Emergency Department and Pediatrics Unit can give to children who are hospitalized. Gift recipients can choose a toy from the closet while hospitalized, and take the toy home to enjoy once they are discharged.
Brooke and her mom later relocated to Voorhees to be closer to her doctors and quickly became a beloved member of the local community.
Those who wish to participate in this drive can make a donation of a toy at: Virtua Fitness, 2309 E Evesham Road, #104; Virtua Express Urgent Care — Voorhees, 158 NJ-73; or the Voorhees Township Town Hall or Police Station.
Donations should be new toys or books that will fit in a cabinet.
No gently used or handmade items can be accepted because of the risk of infection.
Supporters can also order toys online and having them shipped to Virtua, care of Beth Van Buskirk, Manager, Child Life, at Virtua Hospital, 100 Bowman Drive, Voorhees, NJ 08043.
