Opioids to be the topic of discussion in Camden County tomorrow

Politicians, law enforcement and residents will gather at the Camden County Regional Emergency Training Center Lakeland Complex to address the rising tide of opioids

Event: 10 a.m. at Camden County Regional Emergency Training Center Lakeland Complex: 420 Woodbury Turnersville Rd. Gloucester Township, NJ 08012

Tomorrow, Freeholder Director, Louis Cappelli Jr. will participate in state Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal’s community policing outreach program that is sponsored and hosted by Camden County Prosecutor Mary Eva Colalillo. The focus of the program tomorrow will be the opioid epidemic where Cappelli will talk about the work being done throughout the county to stem the tide of destruction this public health crisis has caused in every corner of the community.

“As we have ramped up our efforts over the last four years, from providing treatment options to suing the pharmaceutical companies and the families tied to them- the crisis continues,” Cappelli said. “The scourge of opioids are so pervasive it is the number one challenge in our county today. On a daily basis, we lose 120 people a day to this epidemic throughout the nation and we need to work together to turn the tide.”

Under the new Attorney General initiative, each county prosecutor will be responsible for organizing and hosting a public meeting with community leaders once a quarter. According to the Attorney General, the initiative will result in more than 80 events throughout New Jersey in the next 12 months to bridge the gap and create a bridge between law enforcement and the broader community.

The opioid crisis is driving a public health epidemic and is also the one of the main drivers of violent crime in the nation. Tomorrow law enforcement from all levels will talk about the challenges and innovations that have come from battling the crisis head on.
