Hot fun in the summer

By AUBRIE GEORGE | The Voorhees Sun

The weather is getting warm and school will be out before you know it.

Sooner than later you may find yourself in search of an event or activity that keeps the entertainment coming during the hot summer months.

Here are some things going on around town to keep things exciting during the long, lazy days of summer.

Voorhees Town Picnic

and Craft Fair

Come to Lions Lake Park on June 7 for the 19th annual Voorhees Town Picnic and Craft Fair. From noon to 4 p.m. enjoy free entertainment from “Bandstand” who perform classics from the big band era to Motown. There will also be a performance from Chris Westfall who will show off his inspiring tenor voice and acoustic guitar.

The picnic will also feature a craft fair, pony rides for kids under 12, face-painting, rides, a karate demonstration and tons of food to satisfy every taste.

There will also be a fishing contest held during the picnic with prizes for the first, largest and most fish caught from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

In the event of rain, the picnic will be moved to Sunday, June 14.

Summer Twilight Series

Voorhees is set to kick off its Summer Twilight Series on June 25 with the first of four shows tagged “Legends of Rock.”

The series begins when “Bruce in the U.S.A” comes to Connolly Park for a performance of Bruce Springsteen’s classic hits.

Back to back concerts will follow with a Dave Mathews cover band performing on Thursday, July 30 and “Hot Rocks,” a Rolling Stones cover band, on July 31.

The concerts continue on August 28 with “Hotel California” a tribute band that covers many of the greatest hits by the Eagles.

The Summer Twilight concludes with a movie in the park scheduled for Sept. 26, or Oct. 3 in the event of rain.

All events in the Summer Twilight Series are held at Connolly Park and there is plenty of free parking available.

Voorhees Theater Camp

Send your young thespians to The Voorhees Theater Camp this summer so that they can learn about all aspects of the theater.

There are two separate camps for children interested in theater and those interested in the technical aspect of the stage.

Children entering third through eighth grade are invited to join the Theater Camp from June 29 to August 6 where they will spend half the camp day in rehearsal and half the day in interactive workshops on a variety of theater related topics that are taught by local experts and experienced instructors.

Children entering seventh grade through tenth grade who are more interested in the technical aspect of theater can join the Tech Camp which will run alongside the theater camp.

Tech campers will focus on the technical support such as lighting, sound, sets, and props.

Campers will be under the direction of a professional theater technician.

All campers will show off their skills in performances scheduled for the weekend following camp. For more information and pricing, contact [email protected] or visit www.VoorheesTheatre.org.

Performers entering eighth grade through 22 years old are welcome to audition for the show. Auditions for Godspell are scheduled for June 1 at 6 p.m. at the Voorhees Middle School.

There is a $25 fee to audition.
