Committee formally approves plans for Voorhees Environmental Park

Update: Voorhees Committee members unanimously approved the design and phasing plan for the Voorhees Environmental Park. Absent from the meeting was committee member Joseph Lovallo.

The plans for the 37-acre landfill was submitted by Rutgers’ Center for Urban Environmental Sustainability (CUES) in August. The five phase project will begin with the installation of solar panels, township administrator Larry Spellman said.

Deputy Mayor Harry Platt said he is looking forward to seeing the first phase of the project.

“We are turning a brown field into a green field,” Mayor Michael Mignogna said.

Voorhees Township Committee will meet tonight at 8 p.m. in the Voorhees Town Center.

Members will vote on:

– The first reading of an ordinance authorizing the purchase of property from Hillco Homes for the purpose of maintenance and control of storm water.

– Insertion of an item of revenue in the 2012 budget year for approximately $46,340. The funds, received from the NJ Recycling Tonnage Grant, will be placed under “Garbage & Trash — Other Expenses.”

– Formal endorsement and adoption the design and phasing plan for the Voorhees Environmental Park. The plans for the park were initially presented by Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Science Center for Urban Environmental Sustainability (CUES) in August. The 37 acres of a former landfill on Centennial Boulevard is the site for the park.

– Appointment of Brian Foster, Richard Graham III, Michael Perez, Anthony Lynn Jr. and Kevin Branagan as police officers.

– Authorization of the funds up to $1,261,511 of tax appeal refunding notes.
