Thinking healthy goes beyond nutritious eating habits, regularly scheduled doctor’s visits and exercise. Women are going to be given the chance to learn about all around health to entice a change. The 13th annual Women’s Health Conference will be at Eastern Regional High School on Saturday, Sept. 29.
Camden County Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez said the conference was initially set up to teach women how to take care of themselves. The first women’s conference had approximately 100 people attend the conference, but with the creation of an advisory board, a growing interest in sponsorships and an increasing number of attendees, the conference has slowly expended.
“The whole purpose is to get the message out about taking care of yourself,” Rodriguez said.
According to Rodriguez, women usually take care of their surrounding family members and help in their community. By giving them the necessary information about their own health, it might spark throughout the community.
There are 150 exhibitors at the event, 76 workshops and more than 1100 women who are currently registered for the conference, said Camden County director of public affairs, Joyce Gabriel.
With workshops teaching women about weight loss, nutrition, and breast cancer prevention along with learning how to get rid of back pain, and the best way to take care of your feet, are only a few types of activities at the conference.
There are plenty of fun activities to add on to the educational experience. This year in particular, Rodriguez mentioned an attempt to interest multiple generations caused a bit of a change in this year’s conference.
A bullying seminar, ways to beat peer pressure and even a dance class are activities set up to get the younger generations involved.
All of the programs are set to encouraging self-esteem in teens and woman of all ages in order to help them become more confident, Rodriguez said.
Blood pressure screenings, messages from a chiropractor, information of alcohol abuse, and other various forms of vendors add to the knowledge the conference. “There is something for everybody,” Rodriguez said.
Erika von Tiehl, anchor for Eyewitness News This Morning on CBS 3 and The CW Philly, is this years keynote speaker at the conference. Tiehl will be speaking at 9 a.m.
Registration for the event will begin at 8 a.m. along with a continental breakfast. Workshops are spread throughout the day starting at 10 a.m. Free to all Camden County residents, women are encouraged to bring as many female friends and family members as they want.
“The bottom line is we are trying to make sure the community is healthy,” Rodriguez said.
