Concerts bring sounds of the season to Voorhees library and surrounding area in December

The Camden County Library’s second annual Winter Music Series will offer jazz, Celtic, African drum, a capella, classical music and more in the first weeks of December.

Mark Carroll and Family start the series with traditional Celtic music and a sampling of holiday tunes that were popular in colonial America. The group performs Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Merchantville Branch and Tuesday, Dec. 9 7 p.m. at the Voorhees branch.

The Abe Speller 3rio, formerly known as The New Earth Trio, is back with a Holiday Concert for the family. Speller has put together a trio of passionate musicians in the belief that everything modern has firm roots in the past. Savor the music as they perform jazz standards from the Great American Songbook at the South County Branch on Friday, Dec. 5, 7 p.m.

Enjoy a Pre-Kwanzaa Celebration with the Universal African Dance and Drum Ensemble at two branch libraries in Camden on Saturday, Dec. 6 with shows at Nilsa I. Cruz-Perez Downtown branch, 11 a.m. and at the Riletta L. Cream Ferry Ave. Branch, 2 p.m. Honor the beauty of African culture and family at this workshop and performance meant for all ages.

Shades of Harmony, an all-women’s chorus, will offer a delightful holiday performance of a capella barbershop harmony at the Bellmawr branch also on Saturday Dec. 6 at 11 a.m.

Later the same day, Saturday, Dec. 6, the Westmont Philharmonia Accordion Orchestra brings its symphonic sound to the Haddon Township branch at 3 p.m. Meet the accordion treated as a symphonic instrument.

The Haddonfield Cello Society visits the Merchantville Branch, Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. with a program of songs from around the world including many popular favorites. An audience of all ages is welcome and will be encouraged to sing along with some of the numbers.

Finally the Camden County College Jazz Ensemble will offer the chance to relax and enjoy the afternoon listening to a selection of jazz standards and favorites at the Voorhees branch, Saturday, Dec. 13 at 1 p.m.

“We are so fortunate to have a library system that works to serve our communities in so many ways. This program of musical entertainment so in tune with the season is just one more reason to visit your local library,” said Camden County Freeholder Ian Leonard, liaison to the library.

Registration for any performance is available online at www.camdencountylibary.org/events or by calling the local branch. Branch phone numbers and locations can be found at www.camdencountylibrary.org/locations-hours .
