Tabernacle Township Committee tables ordinance creating Department of Public Safety

In other news, 81 local volunteers were appointed to CERT.

The Tabernacle Township Committee tabled an ordinance to create and designate a department of public safety and a position of public safety director at the committee meeting on July 24.

The Department of Public Safety would include, according to the tabled ordinance, three divisions: the Division of Fire, the Division of Emergency Medical and Rescue Services, and the Division of Emergency Management. Additionally, the head of the Department of Public Safety, called public safety director, would be appointed by the committee.

According to the ordinance, the Public Safety Director would be responsible for the organizational and administrative control of the Department of Public Safety and all its Divisions. Additionally, the director would be responsible “for the effective, proficient and efficient utilization of all emergency assets, resources and equipment in Tabernacle Township” and would not be authorized to supervise, manage or direct the delivery of emergency services during an actual emergency response by any division of the Department of Public Safety.

The head of the Division of Fire would be the Tabernacle Fire Company №1 chief. The head of the Division of Emergency Medical and Rescue Services would be the chief of the Tabernacle Rescue Squad. The head of the Division of Emergency Management would be “appointed by the mayor from among the residents of the municipality,” according to language from the ordinance.

The township committee is expected to vote on the ordinance at the next committee meeting on Aug. 28.

The next Tabernacle Township Committee meeting will be held on Aug. 28 at the Town Hall at 163 Carranza Road in Tabernacle.
