McCarthy resigned last month
Real estate investor Albert D. Segrest joined Cinnaminson Township Committee Monday, April 2, when he was sworn in during the Committee’s work session meeting.
He replaces John McCarthy, who resigned March 18. Segrest will serve the remainder of McCarthy’s unexpired term, which runs until Dec. 31.
Segrest was one of three people nominated by the Cinnaminson Republican Club to replace McCarthy. Members of the Township Committee made the final decision on McCarthy’s replacement.
“We had several exemplary candidates, but one came to the forefront after some communications with all the members of the Committee,” Mayor Howard “Bud” Evans said.
Segrest said he moved to Cinnaminson from Oaklyn about four years ago. He is originally from Pennsauken Township.
“It was a conscious decision to move my family here,” Segrest said. “I had a young family. My kids were just born. It was really just for the schools, obviously the safe streets, (and) parks and recreation.”
“That’s what kind of drew me to get involved with the Committee,” he added. “I wanted to keep that going. I wanted to be a part of it.”
McCarthy could not be reached for comment.
Evans said McCarthy was not planning to run for re-election this year and that his decision to step down was due to an increasingly difficult work schedule.
McCarthy, who previously served as Cinnaminson’s mayor, works as the national sales representative for Sea Box, a company that manufactures and sells shipping containers, according to his LinkedIn page and the company’s website.
Segrest declined to comment when asked about his priorities as a member of Township Committee.
“I’m going to wait until I dig in a little bit, and then I’ll get a better idea of what I’m going to focus on,” he said.
Segrest has filed a petition to run for the seat when McCarthy’s unexpired term runs out.
Two seats on Township Committee will be up for election in November, and the deadline to file for the June primary was April 2.
Segrest and Paul Conda, both Republicans, are the only two candidates who have filed a petition to run for the two spots, according to Clerk Lisa A. Passione. No Democrats have filed paperwork to enter the primary, Passione said.
Evans said Deputy Mayor Donald Brauckmann is not running for re-election.
Conda was one of the other people nominated by the party to fill McCarthy’s seat, Evans said. The mayor said he did not want to reveal the third nominee because he was not sure they wanted their name made public.
In addition to managing and owning real estate, Segrest said he also owns a barbershop in Merchantville. He said he has previously worked for Ron Jaworski Golf, Delco Development and as a general manager for Wawa.
