Gloucester Township Police Department reminds residents about phone scams

If you receive a call from an unknown number asking for personal information, report the number to the police

The following is a release by the Gloucester Township Police Department:

The Gloucester Township Police Department has received an uptick in reported phone scams, so they would like to make sure residents are informed and alert.

Every year, thousands of dollars are lost to telephone scams, ranging from a few dollars to life savings. Scammers will say anything to cheat people out of money.

If you are to receive a call from a number you don’t recognize trying to sell you something, say no, and immediately report to your police station if they ask for personal information, such as your credit card or Social Security number.

Also, you are able to register your home and mobile phone numbers with the National Do Not Call Registry. This won’t stop all unsolicited calls, but it can stop most. Once your number is on the list, if you receive a call from a scammer you should immediately report them at www.donotcall.gov.
