Mt. Laurel resident promotes Cooper River Dragon Boat Festival set for July 28

Jon Gardiner / Special to the Sun: Scenes from the 2017 Cooper River Dragon Boat Festival. This year’s event will be held Saturday, July 28, from 8:30 a.m. through 4 p.m. at Cooper River Park.

Dragon boating involves teams of 20 paddlers racing in 40-foot boats, with a drummer at the front and a steersperson in the back, not to mention a colorful dragon head at the bow and a tail at the stern. Mt. Laurel resident Wendy Schwartz is captain of the River Sirens, the local club team that started the festival.

Mt. Laurel Council honors resident for role as Burlington County’s Miss St. Patrick

It wasn’t quite “Christmas in July” at this week’s Mt. Laurel Township Council meeting, but the meeting did have a slight holiday theme when council honored Mt. Laurel resident Christine Adams for her role as Burlington County’s 2018 Miss St. Patrick. As a lifelong Mt. Laurel resident and someone proud of her Irish heritage, Adams helped lead this year’s Burlington County St. Patrick’s Day parade in downtown Mt. Holly on March 3.

Mt. Laurel Township holds grand opening for upgraded playgrounds at Laurel Acres Park

Mt. Laurel Township officials gathered at Laurel Acres Park this week to dedicate new family-friendly facilities as part of the township’s ongoing, comprehensive open space and recreation program. Improvements at the park include upgrades of the playground areas, including jungle gyms, slides, climbing bars, bridges and ladders.

Deadline to file petition to run in November’s school board elections is July 30

The deadline for Burlington County residents looking to file a petition to run in their local November school board elections will be here soon. Residents have until 4 p.m. on July 30 to file their completed nominating petitions with the office of Burlington County Clerk Timothy Tyler.

State aid reductions to hit the Lenape Regional High School District

At this week’s Lenape Regional High School District Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Carol Birnbohm said that on Friday, July 13, the district was notified its state aid for the upcoming school year has been reduced by $961,456.
