The event will feature a talk exploring the relationship between sex and the Suffrage Movement.
The Alice Paul Institute will host their annual Alice Paul Birthday Bash in celebration of Alice Paul’s 134th birthday.
The event will take place on Jan. 13.
This year API is excited to host Susan Goodier, who will deliver an “inspired talk” exploring what institute officials describe as a rarely discussed topic — “Sex and Suffrage: What Does Sex Have To Do With the Suffrage Movement?”
Goodier’s presentation will bring to light the way concepts of sexuality and sexiness influenced women’s suffrage movement. She will speak about the fears of gender disruption around the turn of the 20th century among the “New Woman” and suffragists.
Goodier will also talk about the ways in which the hostility of anti-suffrage activists often stemmed from homophobia and the fact that so many suffrage activists had long-standing live-in relationships with other women.
Goodier is the coordinator for the Upstate New York Women’s History Organization (UNYWHO).
She is an editor for the New York History journal; where she edited a double issue on woman suffrage.
Her first book, “No Votes for Women: The New York State Anti-Suffrage Movement,” was published by the University of Illinois in 2013.
Her second book, “Women Will Vote: Winning Suffrage in New York State,” was co-authored with Karen Pastorello and published by Cornell University Press in 2017.
Her current book project is a biography of Louisa M. Jacobs, the daughter of Harriet Jacobs, author of “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl.”
She is also working on a book on black women in the New York suffrage movement.

The Alice Paul Birthday Bash, celebrating Alice Paul’s 134th birthday, will take place on Sunday, Jan. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the The Alice Paul Institute located at the historic Paulsdale, located at 128 Hooten Road in Mt. Laruel.
