Parks & Rec’s ‘Teen Clean’ event sees success

The department’s clean-up came the day after Moorestown Day.

Moorestown Parks & Recreation Department’s Teen Clean was held on Sunday, June 3. The Parks and Recreation department provided trash bags and mulch, and 41 volunteers provided the sweat equity to make it a big success.

A total of 31 teens and 10 adults from the Moorestown Rotary Club, wearing volunteer shirts donated by Manhattan Bagel, turned out to spruce up three locations. All volunteered their time on a cool and windy day. Nine teens volunteered to pick up trash from the previous day’s Moorestown Day on Main Street covering the span from Church to Chester.

Fullerton Park at Zelley had the largest turnout with 18 teens picking up trash, pulling weeds from flower beds and raking up leaves and brush. In just two hours, there was a major transformation. The third location at Jeff Young Park and New Albany Recreation Center had 10 members of the Breakfast Rotary Club joined by four teens to do some major weeding and mulching of flower beds. There was also trash pick-up and a nice sprucing up around the base of the Jeff Young Park sign. The Breakfast Rotary Club has kindly “adopted” the Jeff Young Park as their ongoing township service project. We thank all the volunteers for making Moorestown even prettier.

Summer is also officially here so take some time and enjoy the beautiful weather. The Department of Parks and Recreation has launched a Moorestown Walking Club known as MooreWalk which offers organized walks during the week in the morning, afternoon and evenings. These are low-key, low-mileage walks that take you around Moorestown for about an hour. Just show up with some comfortable shoes, and the rest is taken care of. The Department of Parks and Recreation is also organizing guided walks in our beautiful open space. Details of walk times and itineraries can be found at www.facebook.com/moorestownrec.

Moorestown’s Free Concert Series has begun and are on Monday evenings throughout the summer. Concerts will be held on the lawn at the Moorestown Community House. If it rains, concerts move inside. June 18 will feature “Voice of the People: A History of American Folk Music” by David Fry from to 6:30 p.m. It is designed to teach kids about the role of folk music in American history. The Moorestown High School Madrigals, an inspiring a capella group, will perform directly after at 6:30 p.m. On June 25, Jen Dunne, Moorestown librarian, will be entertaining children with stories and songs from 6 to 6:30 p.m. “Trouble With Plaid,” a multi-generational Moorestown Band will follow at 6:30 p.m., performing soft rock favorites. Children’s entertainment and concerts continue through July 30.

An adult soccer league for adults 35 and over starts June 26 through August 28. Play is at Wesley Bishop Middle Turf Field at 1238 North Church Street on Tuesday evenings from 8:30 to 10:15 p.m. It’s a great way to exercise and have fun. All that is required is a basic knowledge of soccer. Come out from the sidelines watching your kids play and get on the field! To register go to www.moorestownrec.com under fall programs.
