Local competes in jingle contest

While watching your favorite TV show, you might get up for a bathroom break or a quick bite to eat during commercial breaks. All of a sudden, a catchy melody comes on and you know what the product is without looking at the screen.

Moorestown resident Andy Gurzynski is more than an IT professional. He recently entered in a nationwide jingle competition for SafeAuto.

SafeAuto’s 5th annual “Do The Jingle” competition was open for submission from October to November. Gurzynski, along with approximately 200 other competitors, submitted videos to the company, he said.

His band name is “Nasty Habits,” while the jingle’s tone reminds him of classical melodies.

“The whistling, with its simple melody line intertwining with the accompanying ukulele chords, is a combination of Mozart and Bach, or what I refer to as a ‘Mach,’” he jokingly said in a recent announcement about his entry in the contest.

Gurzynski didn’t go out searching for a jingle-writing contest. He discovered the contest by watching a commercial.

“I worked on it for a week. Then I just got my camera and recorded it,” he said during a phone interview as he played his ukulele.

He said he just started playing some chords on his ukulele adding whatever came to mind when thinking of SafeAuto’s competition requirements.

“You have to accomplish the business objective,” he said.

In 57 seconds, Gurzynski crammed 1–800-SafeAuto and a short bit about SafeAuto insurance.

The song has to be catchy, he said.

“It’s not easy. You have to get the number in there and tell them about the insurance. At the end of the day, you have to make it catchy,” said Gurzynski. “It’s a lot more difficult than you think.”

Although he created a band name, Gurzynski said he doesn’t have any gigs set up at a local coffee house. He records all of his music in the basement of his home, and posts them on his YouTube site for all to enjoy.

During his senior year in high school, Gurzynski said he took a guitar course called guitar lab. Ever since then, he continued to play the guitar.

As for his jingle writing days, the SafeAuto contest might not be the last time Gurzynski writes a catchy tune.

For the next competition, Gurzynski said he is looking to develop his presence on Facebook and other social media sites.

He said he has to create a larger presence on to Facebook and expand his social networking infrastructure to get more votes.

The final winner will have the highest number of votes when the competition closes on Feb. 28. People must visit the website and vote for their favorite jingle.

He said when you watch his video make sure to have the volume “turned up to 11.”

As of Wednesday, Jan. 16, Gurzynski was up to 1,136 votes putting him in 109th place.

Gurzynski urges all to vote for his jingle. The more votes the better, he said.

The grand prize winner will win $5,000 and be featured in a SafeAuto commercial.

The contest ends at midnight on Thursday, Feb. 28.
