During the most recent town council meeting, one town council member proclaimed the two new members only got elected because of Donald Trump’s tweets. These comments were directed at a Marine who prosecuted terrorists in Iraq and a Naval Academy graduate who has a degree in physics and operates a business in town that trains science educators.
The time seems right for Moorestown to consider changing the form of government to a non-partisan form of government. In the last New Jersey town I lived in, there were no political parties attached to the candidates. Some candidates were politically active and people knew which party they supported, but party issues rarely came up during campaigns or when doing the town’s business. In some cases I never knew which party the members supported, if any.
The town was also divided into wards, and there would be ward meetings so that localized issues could be discussed with the council member representing that ward. It certainly won’t solve all the problems, but it may put a stop to the types of comments seen at the last meeting.
