Drop off worn-out flags for retirement

The 8th District Legislative office will be collecting flags for a retirement ceremony on Oct. 7

The office of Senator Dawn Marie Addiego and Assemblymen Joe Howarth and Ryan Peters is collecting tattered, ripped or faded flags for a flag retirement ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 7.

For the third year, the 8th District Legislative office has joined with the Marlton Elks Club 2514 to collect flags to be properly retired.

“The United States Flag Code instructs that when a flag is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way,” Howarth said. “We’re pleased to be partnering with the Elks Club to see that flags have a respectful retirement.”

Those who have a flag in this condition and would like to see it retired can drop it off at the 8th District Office at 176 Route 70, Suite 13 in Medford. The office has extended hours every Monday to Thursday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“We invite anyone who is looking to retire their faded, worn-out American Flag to drop it off at our office so it can get the sendoff it deserves,” Peters said.

The deadline to drop off a flag for the retirement service is Friday, Oct. 5.

The retirement ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. on Oct. 7 at the Marlton Elks Lodge at 426 Evesboro Medford Road in Evesham.

“The American Flag remains a symbol of pride in this nation, and we shall always treat it as such,” Addiego said.
