MEF awards $10,000 in grants

The Board of Trustees of the Medford Education Foundation is pleased to announce that it has awarded approximately $10,000 in educational grants for the first grant period of 2013.

The grant is in support of the drama workshop program at the Taunton Forge Elementary School, for science, technology, engineering and mathematical teacher training and related classroom materials to benefit the first-grade students at M.H.

Allen Elementary School and the fourth-grade students at Chairville Elementary School, the acquisition of new library books for the M.H. Allen Elementary school library, the acquisition of NOOK reading devices for the Haines Sixth-Grade Center library and the purchase of iPads for the Cranberry Pines Elementary School Media Center.

The program is designed to promote academic projects, which advance the quality of education for the students in Medford by supporting educational projects and programs not otherwise provided for, by the established school curricula and budget.
“The grant program is designed to fund projects which enrich and augment the curriculum,” said Tommie Ann Gibney, president of the Medford Education Foundation. “We are pleased to support our teachers and to encourage creativity in the classroom for the benefit of our K-8 students.”

In addition, the Board of Trustees has announced that a portion of the funds previously donated by MEF to the Medford Township School District will be used to underwrite the cost of a comprehensive, anti-bullying program currently being developed at Memorial Middle School.

This year-long program will be designed to complement anti-bullying interventions already in place by educating seventh- and eighth-grade students about bullying and acknowledging students at Memorial who take a stand against bullying — either by befriending students who are in need of a friend or by intervening in a situation where a student might feel bullied.
