Medford Friends Meeting (Quakers) will offer a Children’s Peace Camp from July 6–10 at the Meetinghouse grounds, 14 Union St., Medford, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camp Director, Hannah Holby, a Medford native and life-long member of the Meeting, has designed “Peace and the Environment” as the central theme for the activities.

“Our plan for the week,” Holby explained. “Is to develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world and have lots of fun doing it. We’ll take nearby field trips, play games and create art projects to demonstrate our inter-connectedness with the natural world. In a variety of interesting ways, we will focus on our relationship to food, water, and technology.”

The director explained further that campers will have the chance to experiment with solar ovens, create a movie project, screen print their own re-useable bags and take a closer look at examples of local sustainable efforts.

“Children will experience how our own impact on the environment affects peace globally and locally,” Holby said.

Holby has worked as a summer camp instructor, program director, and counselor for more than a decade. She helped start a gardening and wilderness program at Camp Dark Waters, the Quaker-directed residential camp in Medford. She also worked at Farm & Wilderness Camp in Vermont, as teen program director. She is a summer art camp instructor for the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and during the year she directs an after-school “maker” program for the Free Library of Philadelphia.

“I grew up attending Medford Meeting,” Holby said, “and I am passionate about working as an educator to foster stewardship for the environment and respect for all living things.”

Medford Friends children’s Peace Camp isopen to children of all faiths ages 9–13. Advance registration is required. Deadline for registration is June 26. For more information, email [email protected] or call (609) 953–8914.

Medford Quakers have been a presence in the Medford area since 1759 and last year celebrated the 200th anniversary of its “new” meetinghouse built in 1814. Meeting for Worship is on Sunday, 10 a.m., with First Day (Sunday) School running concurrently. All are welcome.
