Two senior leaders of the Cherokee High School varsity wrestling team were honored Tuesday night by Mayor Randy Brown and members of council for an end to their successful wrestling careers at the high school.
Mike Zeuli and Ben Fanjoy received proclamations from Brown and some kind words from the township council.
Fanjoy finished his Cherokee career with a 128–26 record and Zeuli ended his with a 77–17 record. Both went deep into the individual Atlantic City Tournament and both have college aspirations.
Zeuli lost to Bound Brook High School’s Andrew Campolattano in the 215-pound championship match. Campolattano only lost one match his entire high school career.
Fanjoy won this year’s District 27 tournament.
“I’m around professional athletes, and those guys aren’t heroes,” Brown said to an assembled group of middle school wrestlers. “These guys are the heroes you should be looking up too.”
Zeuli and Fanjoy both excel in the classroom as well, Brown said. Zeuli will be attending Princeton University next year and Fanjoy has yet to decide, but said The College of New Jersey is on his radar.
Zeuli is also a member of the All South Jersey Football team for his performance at the high school. Zeuli only wrestles about two months out of the year because he plays football and lacrosse as well.
In other township news, Township Manager Tom Czerniecki gave an update on the township’s road program and presented a proposal to repave several miles of township roadway with a special technique called microsurfacing.
Microsurfacing is a relatively inexpensive maintenance program that covers roadway in a mixture of oil and rock. The mixture makes the roadway almost completely waterproof and reduces potholes on the surface for several years.
Of the 150 miles of roadway in Evesham, Czerniecki said about 25 to 30 miles of road is too far damaged to be just simply resurfaced and will most likely have to be reconstructed.
