The following information is on file with the Evesham Township Police Department:
In 2018, the Evesham Township Police Department collected 950.5 pounds of expired and unused prescriptions through its “Project Medicine Drop” drop box in the lobby of the Evesham Township Police Department.
According to police officials, the Project Medicine Drop drop box installed at the department in February 2015 is proving to be “hugely successful” in providing a safe way for the town’s residents to dispose of unused medications.
Police say these expired and unused prescription medications are often left lying in medicine cabinets and cupboards. This leads to their potential misuse and abuse.
Adults and seniors may inadvertently take expired or unused prescription medications that are no longer effective. This can have dangerous interactions with other medications.
Drugs that have been prescribed to treat a medical condition, or ones that are sold over-the-counter may not be safe for everyone. Safe disposal of unused and expired drugs ensures they do not end up in the wrong hands.
Members of the public are invited to visit the Project Medicine Drop site and drop off any unused prescription medications anonymously and with no questions asked. The ETPD Project Medicine Drop site make this service available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
Police say Project Medicine Drop is an important component of the New Jersey Attorney General’s effort to stop the diversion and abuse of prescription drugs, including highly addictive opiate painkillers.
Hypodermic needles and epi-pens are not accepted.
