Clubs at Cherokee High School join forces to benefit teens suffering from cancer
The DECA business competition club and Students Movement Against Cancer club worked to benefit the Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation.
Two of Cherokee High School’s extra-curricular clubs recently teamed up to raise funds and awareness for teen cancer.
DECA, a business competition club, and SMAC, Students Movement Against Cancer, have been working together on several service projects to benefit the Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation.
The Alicia Rose Victorious Foundation (ARVF) was founded in 2002 by Voorhees residents Mario and Gisele DiNatale after their daughter, Alicia, passed away from leukemia during her high school years.
While Alicia was receiving treatment, the couple began to recognize the lack of programs available for teens with cancer and started the foundation.
The first project that DECA and SMAC embarked on was a school-wide Bandana Day.
Bandanas were sold for $3 each and all proceeds were donated to ARFV.
The purpose of this event was not only to raise money for the organization but also to make the students and faculty more aware of teen cancer.
The Bandana Day raised a total of $900.
The clubs continued with their commitment and goals by collecting items to then be placed in “Teen Kits”.
Items such as lip balm, socks, fabric markers, tic-tacs, etc. were placed in kits and donated to local hospitals by the ARVF.
DECA and SMAC’s efforts to support the ARVF recently culminated when the club members visited the foundation at the Voorhees Town Center.
Members spent time making bandana pillows, assembling teen kits and packing them for distribution to local hospitals.
While the goal was to raise funds and awareness for the foundation, officials say it also provided an “incredible learning experience” for the students.
