Off-duty police officers to provide driving instruction to teens

A new approach to teaching teens to be safe drivers is coming to southern New Jersey, with the opening of StreetSafe Driving Academy in Haddonfield.

The four-year old driver education company has successfully set a higher standard of teen training for more than 1,700 families in the Pennsylvania suburbs, and will now offer its unique combination of on-the-road training by top-notch off-duty police officers and high-tech teaching techniques to families in New Jersey.

“Car accidents are the number one killer of teens, and yet most parents put more time, attention and money into training their children for sports than they do into helping them develop the critical driving skills they need to be lifelong safe drivers,” said Meg Kramer, founder of StreetSafe. “The way we teach young people to drive hasn’t really changed in the last three decades, but driving is much more complex and our roads are more dangerous than they used to be. It’s time for a fundamental shift in the way we approach driver training.”

StreetSafe’s Haddonfield branch provides off-duty New Jersey police officers who are experts in safe, strategic driving as trustworthy driving coaches.

All training is conducted in new vehicles by Subaru, headquartered in Cherry Hill.

“Subaru is proud to be the official vehicle of StreetSafe Driving Academy,” said Bill Cyphers, senior vice president of sales, Subaru of America, Inc. “With Subaru’s emphasis on safety, it is a natural fit for us to partner with StreetSafe in our shared mission of safe driving.”

Under New Jersey law, teens must have a minimum of six hours of behind-the-wheel driver training in order to be eligible for a learner’s permit. StreetSafe’s packages cover the skills required to acquire a permit, plus added instruction on challenging driving environments such as highways, turnpike construction zones, traffic circles and night time driving. StreetSafe also offers a lesson specifically devoted to car care, maintenance and emergencies, which is held at Cherry Hill Subaru.

The vision and written permit tests are offered in the convenient Haddonfield classroom, avoiding the need to make a separate trip to the Motor Vehicle Commission center.
