Eating right to come to light at ‘Girl’s Night’

Girls in grades fourth through 12th along with their parents or guardians are invited to learn about eating right at the third Girl’s Night Out program in Cherry Hill.

Dr. Charlotte Markey, an associate professor and graduate director at Rutgers University, will lead the program, which will include an interactive discussion.

The night will be held on Thursday, Feb. 7, at Rosa International Middle School, 485 Browning Lane, Cherry Hill, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the library.

According to Linda Dombrowski, the drug and alcohol alliance coordinator for Cherry Hill Township, the “What are you eating?” topic follows last May’s “Mirrors, Moods and Model Mania,” and November’s “What are we wearing?”

The last part of the series, “You and Your Body” will be held on March 20 and focus on how physical changes effect feelings about our bodies and ourselves, Dombrowski said.

The hope is for discussions to continue at home from the workshop, she said.

“We’re all different sizes,” she said. “We’re all different shapes, and we all can’t look the same.”

There is no fee to attend, and registration is preferred, though not necessary.

About 60 girls attended the kick-off event, followed by 80 in November.

“We’re hoping for the same or somewhat better this time,” Dombrowski said.

Markey was chosen as the leader following a workshop she hosted roughly five years ago on, “From Barbie Dolls to Britney Spears” that was very successful.

“She’s done a lot of research,” said Dombrowski. “She wants it to definitely be interactive.”

Discussion will focus on what images the girls are seeing in the media, including reality television shows, and how they feel about their own body image in relation.
