Sustainable Moorestown hosts EV Fest and Green Fair

Moorestown’s inaugural EV Fest and Green Fair 2024, presented by Sustainable Moorestown, will be held at the Moorestown Town Green on West Second Street on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Electric vehicles of all types and brands will be on display, both by private owners and by local dealers of national brands. Guests will also be able to check out vendors in the EV and charging space to learn how to power the future of transportation.

Rain or shine, attendees will have access to vehicle demonstrations and information. There will also be food and refreshments.

“It would be cool to bring in all of these other vendors and other people who have EVs and check out the community,” said Chris Bojarski, board member of Sustainable Moorestown, of bringing the event to the township. “Because I know that EVs, for example – people who have them are very community-focused – anytime you run into them, they love to talk about their car.

“It’s always a fun experience, so having people come together for that looked like something that would be really exciting.”

All-electric vehicles – also referred to as battery electric vehicles (BEVs) – have electric motors instead of internal combustion engines. They use a large traction battery pack to power the electric motor and must be plugged into a wall outlet or charging equipment, also called electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE).

Because it runs on electricity, an EV emits no exhaust from a tailpipe and does not contain the typical liquid fuel components, such as a fuel pump, fuel line or fuel tank, according to the website for the United States Department of Energy.

“A big one (benefit of owning an EV) is not having to pay for gas,” Bojarski noted. “Gas prices can go up and down and it can be kind of expensive. Generally, electricity is number one, a little more stable in price, and number two, cheaper, so that’s a big piece … Another piece that’s very beneficial is actually not having to do a lot of maintenance.

“Traditional gas cars, because they have engines, all need oil changes and have to be inspected and stuff like that,” he added. “EVs don’t have any of those parts, so they actually don’t need oil changes, they don’t need any of that stuff, they don’t need to go for inspections …

“It’s a lot lower in maintenance cost and maintenance time for us,” Bojarski continued. “We charge ours (he and his wife own a Ford Mustang Mach-E) at home, which a lot of people like to do, and that’s really where a lot of the cost savings come in.”

The Moorestown EV Fest also lines up with National Drive Electric Week (Sept. 27-Oct. 6), a nationwide celebration to raise awareness of the benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid cars, trucks, motorcycles and more.

“It’s going to be really exciting to see everyone come out, experience (the fair), see what they’re (EVs) about, see what they are …” Bojarski said. “I’m excited by the technology. I think other people would be, too, if they came out and saw and were able to interact and talk to people …

“I think the community aspect of being able to meet other drivers is going to be great.”
