The Mantua Township Committee hosted its monthly meeting on Aug. 12, when Mayor Robert Zimmerman provided updates and information on a number of community issues.
The meeting kicked off with a moment of silence for the family of late Mantua resident Casey Power, who died as a result of domestic violence in 2021. Her family created the Casey Power Foundation to raise awareness of and support other victims of domestic violence.
Members of the township committee acknowledged the foundation at the meeting.
“As you may or may not know,” said Zimmerman, “we’re wearing T-shirts tonight in honor of the Casey Power Foundation, in support of her mother, Maryanne. Casey was unfortunately killed a few years ago in an act of domestic violence, so her mother has started this cause in Casey’s name.
“And we stand with Maryanne in support of her efforts to spread awareness for domestic violence.”
The committee then introduced two new ordinances, one of which will amend existing regulations for the township’s stormwater management, as required by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).
The other ordinance will prohibit parking on the south side of Spruce Street during all school days and hours to enhance bus and traffic safety. Both ordinances will get public hearings at the Monday, Sept. 9, committee meeting. Several resolutions were also approved by the committee through a consent agenda
To close out the meeting, Zimmerman provided updates on a number of upcoming events in Mantua. But first he gave a shoutout to Deputy Mayor Pete Scirrotto – whose birthday was the same day as the meeting – and congratulated him on his 33 years with the committee.
“He hasn’t missed a meeting in 33 years,” noted Zimmerman of Scirrotto, who was then applauded by residents in attendance.
Zimmerman also announced a week-long series of festivities in early October that will be hosted by local resident Ashley Levison to raise awareness for breast cancer. Events are still being planned, but the kickoff for the week will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Chestnut Branch Park.
“She has a whole agenda, has a list of speakers, and hopefully the township committee will be able to make it Oct. 5,” noted Zimmerman.
As it does every year, the committee will issue a breast-cancer awareness proclamation at the October session. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Mantua and around the country.
The Sept. 9 committee meeting will begin at 6 p.m.
