Cherry Hill West junior and lifeguard Will Kehan and John Flocco, manager of Covered Bridge Swim Club, were recognized for saving the life of a young boy in June.
At its early July meeting, township council issued a proclamation to the youths that noted how on June 22, Kehan noticed a young child underwater and blew his whistle three times before diving in. The child was not breathing, but Flocco detected a pulse, so he and Kehan delivered first aid. Paramedics on scene confirmed the two had saved the child’s life.
“Moments like that are exactly what they trained for,” said Mayor David Fleisher. “The entire team did an outstanding job in a chaotic situation, so again, a hearty thank you for their bravery and for executing their duties and saving someone’s life.”
During his meeting remarks, Fleisher also applauded the township’s Independance Day celebration on July 3 at Cherry Hill West, where approximately 5,000 people gathered for fireworks.
“The July 3 event was more than about just fireworks, it was about reinvigorating a sense of pride and community spirit,” he noted. ” … Last week’s events demonstrated what we can accomplish when there is a plan, accountability and collaboration amongst the professionals responsible for delivering a safe event for our town.
“I could not be more proud for this team.”

- Township council last month celebrated a win for the Cherry Hill West volleyball team and cited the Cherry Hill African American Civic Association’s Juneteenth event.
- The police department will host National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the municipal complex, where there will be live demonstrations, food, games, music and prizes.
