Community groups hosting special discussion featuring NYPD Police Captain Jamiel Altaheri on Nov. 3 in Cherry Hill

Altaheri is the first Yemeni-American police captain in the NYPD and the highest-ranking Muslim. He will speak about bridging the communication gap between law enforcement officers and the Muslim community, as well as the importance of diversity, community policing, collaboration and religious sensitivity.

The Jewish Catholic Muslim Dialogue of Southern New Jersey, the Jewish Community Relations Council and the G.I.F.T. Ministry of the Catholic Church of St. Mary are presenting a special event entitled “Building Bridges and Taking Down Walls,” on Thursday, Nov. 3 at St. Mary Parish Hall, 2001 Springdale Road in Cherry Hill. The event begins at 7 p.m.

The event features Captain Jamiel S. Altaheri of the New York City Police Department. Altaheri made history by becoming the first Yemeni-American to attain the rank of police captain in the NYPD. In addition, he is the highest-ranking Muslim in the department. Altaheri is currently assigned as the executive officer of the 23rd precinct in the upper east side of Manhattan, proudly known as “El Barrio.”

Altaheri is passionate about bridging the communication gap between law enforcement officers and the Muslim community. Her has conducted numerous lectures and discussions on the important of diversity, community policing, collaboration and religious sensitivity. Altaheri has been interviewed on television about his work, most recently on the CBS Morning Show.

Community partners for the event include the Camden County Human Relations Commission, Cherry Hill Police Department, the Catholic Church of St. Mary, the Muslim American Community Association and the Cherry Hill African American Civic Association.
