Teens cook up snacks at library

The Mullica Hill library will host its first chefs program for teens on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

During the session from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. teens from 13 to 18 years old will learn how to cook a variety of foods and nutritious snacks. According to teen librarian Crysta Miller, the idea for the free event came from young library patrons who wanted to see a program that focuses on cooking.

“They asked for programs centered around cooking, so I designed the program to teach them how to make easy snacks with more sustenance to them,” Miller noted. “This is the first program of the series, with the hope that it continues monthly with a new recipe each time.”

The program will teach teens how to make Spam musubi, a Japanese dish that contains Spam, rice, dried seaweed known as nori, rice vinegar, sugar, soy sauce, oyster sauce and oil. Ingredients will be provided and a vegetarian option will be offered.

“This recipe involves crisping up some Spam meat, laying it on an equal-size rice pillow, and then wrapping in seaweed with a soy-based sauce. This has become a popular snack food, and I can’t wait to see how it comes together.”

Recipes and dates for future events have yet to be determined. The Feb. 27 session does not require a library card, but registration in advance is necessary to determine the amount of ingredients for each person. The cooking program is among others geared to teens, including a wellness program that runs until April and the monthly teen game night, which will have its next session at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday March 6.
