As winter takes its hold on the area, Atlantic City Electric has issued guidelines and tips for its customers in Berlin and Gloucester Township to reduce energy use and control costs.
“As temperatures drop and energy usage rises, the company is dedicated to providing energy-saving tips and crucial information on available assistance to help customers manage their energy consumption efficiently,” said Candice Womer, senior communications specialist at Atlantic City Electric.
Among tips for customers are:
Thermostat management: Lowering the thermostat by a few degrees can save up to 2% on heating bills for each degree lowered. Investing in a smart thermostat can provide additional control.
Unplugging: Avoid unnecessary energy consumption by unplugging fully-charged devices.
Blind adjustment: Utilize blinds to capture sunlight during the day for radiant heating benefits and close them at night to retain heat.
Energy-efficient lighting: Installing LED bulbs can result in up to 75% less energy usage compared with standard bulbs.
Air leak checks: Regularly inspect ductwork for air leaks in forced-air heating systems.
Home insulation: Seal windows and doors with caulking or weather-stripping, install storm windows, and close chimney flues.
Hot water heater: Lower water heater temperature to save money and energy.
Radiator maintenance: Regular dusting or vacuuming of radiators helps maintain efficiency.
Equipment servicing: Periodically service heating equipment for optimal performance.
ENERGY STAR products: Customers are encouraged to look for the ENERGY STAR label on appliances and electronics for energy-efficient choices.
Womer also described the electric company’s Quick Home Energy Check (QHEC) Program, where a certified energy analyst conducts home walk-throughs and installs energy-saving products at no cost to customers.
According to Womer, more than 34,000 customers received about $88 million in energy assistance in 2022.
