Baskets of cheer for the needy

When it comes to donating to those less fortunate during the holidays, consider the Delran Knights of Columbus – Council 1436.

Each year, the Knights run a Christmas basket program that provides needy families in the area with a complete holiday dinner and all the trimmings. It also provides toys, clothes, and monetary support to the families, as well as to crisis and intervention centers nearby. The donations are non-denominational and the determination of recipients is based strictly on need, according to Richard Keegan, member of the Delran Knights.

Although preparations for the Knights effort have been in progress for months, this weekend culminates a period of collecting, organizing, distributing and delivering more than 800 boxes of food and toys to about 200 families.

Knights and their families, local churches and organizations, schools, police departments and sports teams donate their time and vehicles for the Christmas basket deliveries, according to program coordinator Tom “Moo” Derrico.
