Fitness for ‘little ones’: Exercise for Mullica Hill toddlers

The Harrison Township Recreation Commission is partnering with Tumblin’ Tots to provide activities and exercises for Mullica Hill toddlers who are 2 to 5 years old.

The aim is to help kids increase their flexibility, balance and rhythm and give them a boost of confidence. Sign-ups have begun for the program’s winter session, scheduled for Fridays in January, February and March at American Legion Post 452.

There are two sets of classes available, one for those 2 to 3-and-a-half years old and the other for ages 3-and-a-half to 5, with a maximum of 12 kids for each. The sessions, according to the Tumblin’ Tots website, include movement, music, tumbling, exercise and other activities that promote cooperation and listening.

“It’s a fun fitness class for the little ones,” said Recreation Coordinator Sharon Chew. “They do stretching, obstacle courses and so much more. The commission provides the registration while they (Tumblin’ Tots) provide the service. It’s a good Christmas gift for grandparents to get, since it’s the gift that keeps on giving.”

To Chew, the program benefits kids by helping them get a head start on values taught in preschool and interact with each other, in some cases forming lifelong bonds. The classes also enable new mothers to meet each other.

“Many of the kids continue to interact even after the classes end,” Chew explained. “It’s a good outlet for the kids to let loose. It helps kids with low self-esteem and helps shy kids come out of their shell a bit. It also helps them learn about important concepts, like sharing, before they eventually get to middle school.”

The partnership between the recreation commission and Tumblin’ Tots began 12 years ago, when the latter broached the idea of working together. The classes initially took place at the Mullica Hill library before moving to the American Legion Post.

Dates for the classes are Jan. 5, 12, 19, 26; Feb. 2, 9, 23; and March 1, 8, 15 and 22. Registration is available on SignUpGenius.com, where there are details on prices and times. The recreation commission is also expected to host spring Tumblin’ Tots classes, with times and dates to come.
