Library workshop will help teens learn job skills

Udemy database exposes participants to an online instruction and teaching marketplace

The Mullica Hill library is offering teens the opportunity to build and hone the professional skills needed to join the workforce through its Udemy Workshop on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m.

Teens ages 13 to 18 will use Udemy, an online learning and teaching marketplace that provides access to more than 213,000 courses in 75-plus categories, according to the Gloucester County Library System (GCLS) website. Among them are programming, marketing and data science.

“It is an incredible resource that is free to use at GCLS,” said Teen Librarian Crystal Miller, who will lead the workshop. “My goal is to teach teens how to utilize this resource to help them develop professional skills ahead of graduation. All of the courses offered on the platform can be completed at the individual’s own pace, so there is not additional pressure or work put on them.”

The course offers teens help to build the kind of skills that will set them apart from other candidates in a job search and how to conduct that search in a low-stress environment. They will also learn how to navigate the Udemy database and figure out what course would most benefit them when they eventually search for a job as adults.

“The hope is, when it comes time to job search, they will have developed some professional skills that set them apart from other candidates,” Miller explained, “and will allow for an easier time finding and securing a job.

“Teens will receive a comprehensive tutorial on how to use the database, how to find and enroll in the courses that interest them, and how to apply those skills in their future job roles.”

Udemy can also be used outside of the workshop at any library system branch. While the workshop is free, courses require a purchase. A library card is not required.

To attend, fill out a registration form on the GCLS website. It requires a name, email address and phone number. Each attendee must also register for the event separately.
