Cherry Hill resident Alexa Reeves, 14, got the chance of a lifetime this past summer, when performed in a significant role in a musical in New York. Reeves played the role of Meredith Mitchell in the show “Peace, Love and Cupcakes: The Musical.” The show was part of the New York Musical Festival and was on stage at the Acorn Theatre on 42nd Street in late July.

Prior to the show’s opening, Reeves spoke to the Cherry Hill Sun about how the show was the first step toward fulfilling her dream of becoming a Broadway actress.

“I’m very excited to show them this is what I want,” Reeves said about the show. “I don’t want to do anything else. I want to be on Broadway.”

In the show, Reeves’ character, Mitchell, is described as the Queen Bee of Blakely Middle School and bullies the show’s main character Kylie Carson, who is the new kid at the school. The character presented some challenges for Reeves.

“I think the toughest part about playing Meredith is hurting someone’s feelings,” Reeves said. “I know it’s not real life, but I still feel bad.”

Reeves enjoyed the anti-bullying message in the show. As part of the performance, he and other members of the cast teamed up with the non-profit organization No Bully, which trains schools on using students’ compassion to stop bullying.

“Our mission is to teach kids about inclusion and how everyone should include everyone, no matter what they look like, race, nationality, sex, it doesn’t matter,” Reeves said.
