Harrison police get trauma kit for K-9 unit

Donation comes from Hogs and Heroes cycling nonprofit

The Harrison Township Police Department recently got a trauma kit for its K-9 unit donated by the Hogs and Heroes Foundation, a nonprofit organization of bikers.

The kit includes essentials to treat the department’s lone K-9, Dunkin, in the event of an emergency, including bandages and Narcan, the overdose antidote. The kit itself was assembled by Protection4Paws, a nonprofit that helps K-9 units in the tri-state area by raising money needed for supplies.

Harrison Police Chief Ronald Cundey discussed the donation during his public-safety report at the Aug. 21 township committee meeting.

“I wanted to make a special thanks to the Hogs and Heroes Foundation,” said Cundey. “They donated a trauma med kit for Dunkin through Paws4Protection, and K-9 officer (Greg) Germscheid will be trained on using the things in that kit in the event (of an emergency). “

Germscheld is Dunkin’s handler. The Harrison K-9 unit was established in February of last year. But because it is not fully funded by the police department, the unit relies on donations. The department has already held donation drives, including one that took place in November.

“Donations help with training Dunkin, as well as providing food, veterinary care and special equipment,” said police Capt. Adam McEvoy. “We would like to add another dog to the unit. We’re appreciative of all the donations we’ve received.”

The Hogs and Heroes Foundation has already made donations to both the department and the K-9 unit. Earlier this year, it donated a crate, treats and toys paid for with funds raised at a bartending event in March.

“The bartending event on March 24 at the American Legion in Mullica Hill was a huge success,” said the foundation’s Chrissy “Crazy” Barber. “We would like to thank everyone who contributed that night to make this happen, all who attended, as well as all who donated food items and other items we needed for that event.”

“They’ve really been a great help to us with our K-9 unit,” Cundey noted of the foundation. “Not only on this project, but several other projects where they raised funds to donate things to help us out with Dunkin.”
