Moorestown High seniors Peyton Delorme and Asha Patel have each received $1,000    scholarships to honor their contributions toward and commitment to improving the township.

Delorme got the MIA (Moorestown Improvement Association) scholarship and Patel the Ellen Shiplee scholarship. The Moorestown High students were also involved in a variety of school activities.

Delorme plans to attend Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology in Canada to become a firefighter and EMT. During her time in high school, she was a junior volunteer firefighter in town who averaged 15 calls a month, and also enrolled in an EMT certification program at Rowan College of Burlington County.

“When I’m not riding around in the back of an ambulance or fire truck, I’m the student trustee for the Moorestown Historical Society,” Delorme noted. “I’m gratified to have had the opportunity to educate the public about the history of Moorestown.”

Patel will enter Virginia Tech in the fall to prepare for a career in biomedical engineering. Her high-school years included service in the environmental club, volunteer tutoring with the Homework Helpers Program, and active support of the dramatic arts. She also helped put on musicals at William Allen Middle and Upper Elementary schools.

“I got to see the smiles on the faces of the kids each day,” Patel recalled. “None of the volunteers ever complained when we had to lift heavy sets or spend endless hours digging through old bins of costumes …

“I learned that a community can only function if all its members are willing to contribute.”
